Rules of the Football Coin Toss

The pre-match toss is governed by official FA laws and holds strategic value depending on pitch and weather conditions.

01

Official IFAB Law 8

Under the International Football Association Board (IFAB) Laws of the Game, a coin toss decides the start of play. The captain who wins the coin toss gets to choose either which goal to attack in the first half, or to take the kick-off.

02

Who Calls the Side?

In accordance with FA procedures, the referee flips the coin and the away team captain is invited to call the coin (heads or tails). If the match is at a neutral venue, the referee designates one team as the away team for the purpose of the toss.

03

Strategic Considerations

Wind direction, low-lying sun, and pitch slope are key strategic factors. Winning captains will often choose to change ends if a strong wind is blowing, ensuring they play with the wind at their back or avoid staring into a blinding sun in the first half.
